THE ORIGINS

The Valsugana valley has always been a zone of passage and a link between the River Po floodplain and the north. It is believed that the area surrounding the source of the river Brenta has been permanently populated since the Neolithic Age.

In the Casai Valley, near the castle’s ruins, prehistoric objects from the Iron Age (VI-V century BC) were found including bracelets, necklaces and glass beads.

The place where these items were found, next to the location of the castle in an elevated position with respect to the Brenta River valley. This leads us to believe that even in prehistoric times the zone where the castle was built was used as a shelter by the populations living in the area.

In 15 BC, the Roman road leading from Altino to Germany was first constructed and Selva became part of the important trade routes of the Latin world. The arrival and the establishment of Roman domination, around the first century AD. and the relative safety of the roads allowed the local population to settle in less arduous places than Selva and create the villages that are still present in Valsugana such as Levico.
